Beware: It’s snake season in the Gila Valley

Ahhh, springtime in the Gila Valley is a time of renewal and regeneration of wildflowers, baby bunnies, rattlesnakes and scorpions.

So while you and your children are out enjoying the warming weather and clear skies, make sure you also keep an eye out for creepy-crawlies.

There are 17 different species or subspecies of rattlesnakes in Arizona, but the most common is the Western diamondback. All are poisonous, and despite common beliefs, do not necessarily rattle before striking.

Taking simple precautions can prevent snake bites. Following are some snake facts and warnings from www.pharmacy.ariz ona.edu.

• Leave wild animals alone. Fifty to 70 percent of reptile bites managed by the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center were provoked by the person who was bitten — that is, someone was trying to kill, capture or harass the animal.
• Be aware of peak movement times. Reptiles in Arizona are most active in the warmer months of April through October. During the hottest months, they will be most active at night. They may be encountered during the day in spring and fall or during a warm day in winter.
• Watch where you put your hands and feet. Try to keep your hands and feet out of crevices in rocks, wood piles and deep grass. Always carry a flashlight and wear shoes or boots when walking after dark.
• Dead snakes can bite. Never handle a venomous reptile, even after it’s dead. Reflex strikes with injected venom can occur for several hours after death.
• Install outdoor lighting for yards, porches and sidewalks. If you see a venomous reptile in your yard, it is probably just “passing through.” However, if you are concerned about a dangerous animal in your yard, seek professional assistance in removing it.

My family had an up-close and personal encounter with a baby rattler about three years ago, and we found out that we had no idea how to handle a snake bite. Following is some very important advice about how to handle a poisonous snake bite.

• Don’t use ice
• Don’t use constricting bands or suction. Using “extractors” does not remove a significant amount of venom and the process can increase tissue damage
• Don’t give alcohol or medication
• Don’t wait to see if you get symptoms
• Don’t try to catch the snake
• The snake may bite again
• Capture will delay your getting to the hospital
• Treatment will be the same no matter which kind of rattlesnake bit you
• Do relax and move as little as possible
• Do splint the affected limb if you can
• Do remove tight clothing, shoes or jewelry from the bitten limb
• Do go to the nearest medical facility immediately.

If you are not sure what has bitten you or your child, call Poison Control, 1-800-222-1222, immediately. My husband and I treated our daughter’s bite as a scorpion bite until her leg began to turn black. My husband then called Poison Control, which realized immediately that we were dealing with a snake bite.

Let's discuss a few things before you fumble with swapping the unused ski rack for the unused bike rack on the Subaru. So yes, you've noticed the sun is out, and hey!- maybe it would be cool to to some bike riding. Let's keep in mind that the sun came out of all 600,000 of us, so for the most part, you're not the only one who noticed. Please remember that when you walk into my shop on a bright, sunny Saturday morning. It will save you from looking like a complete twat that huffs "Why are there so many people here?" Are we all on the same page now about it being sunny outside? Have we all figured out that we're not the only clever people that feel sunny days are good for bike riding? Great. I want to kiss all of you on your forehead for sharing this moment with me. Put your vitamin D starved fingers in mine, and we'll move on together to some pointers that will make life easier. SOME POINTERS FOR THE PHONE: - I don't know what size of bike you need. The only thing that I can tell over the phone is that you sound fat. I don't care how tall you are. I don't care how long your inseam is. Don't complain to me that you don't want to come ALL THE WAY down to the bike shop to get fitted for a bike. I have two hundred bikes in my inventory. I will find one that fits you. Whether you come from the north or the south, my shop is downhill. Pretend you're going to smell a fart, ball up, and roll your fat ass down here. - Don't get high and call me. Write it down, call me later. When I have four phone lines ringing, and a herdlet of people waiting for help, I can't deal with you sitting there "uuuuhhh"-ing and "uuummm"-ing while your brain tries to put together some cheeto-xbox-fixie conundrum. We didn't get disconnected, I left you on hold to figure your shit out. -I really do need to see your bike to know what is wrong with it. You've already figured out that when you car makes a noise, the mechanic needs to see it. When your TV goes blank, a technician needs to see it. I can tell you, if there is one thing I've learned from you fucking squirrels, it's that "doesn't shift right" means your bike could need a slight cable adjustment, or you might just need to stop backing into it with the Subaru. Bring it in, I'll let you know for sure. - No, I don't know how much a good bike costs. For some, spending $500 dollars is a kingly sum. For others, $500 won't buy you one good wheel. You really need to have an idea of what you want, because every one of you raccoons "doesn't want to spend too much". FOR YOU INVENTIVE TYPES AND DO-IT-YOURSELFERS: - Just because you think is should exist, doesn't mean that it does. I know that to you, a 14 inch quill stem makes perfect sense, but what makes more sense is buying a bike that fits you, not trying to make your mountain bike that was too small for you to begin with into a comfort bike. - If some twat on some message board somewhere says that you can use the lockring from your bottom bracket as a lockring for a fixie conversion doesn't mean that A: you can, or B: you should. Please listen to me on this stuff, I really do have your best interests at heart. - I love that you have the enthusiasm to build yourself a recumbent in the off season. That does not mean however, that I share your enthusiasm; ergo I won't do the "final tweaks" for you. You figure out why that Sram shifter and that Shimano rear derailleur don't work together. While we're at it, you recumbent people scare me a little. Don't bring that lumbering fucking thing anywhere near me. A DEDICATION TO ALL THE HIPSTER DUCHEBAGS: -If you shitheads had any money, you wouldn't NEED a vintage Poo-zhow to get laid. Go have an ironic mustache growing contest in front of American Apparel, so that I can continue selling $300 bikes to fatties, which is what keeps the lights on. - Being made in the 80's may make something cool, but that doesn't automatically make something good. The reason that no one has ridden that "vintage" Murray is because it's shit. It was shit in the 80's, a trend it carried proudly through the 90's, and rallied with into the '00's. What I mean to say is, no, I can't make it work better. It's still shit, even with more air in the tires. SO YOU'RE GONNA BUY A BIKE: Good for you! Biking is awesome. It's easy, it's fun, it's good for you. I want you to bike, I really do. To that end, I am here to help you. -Your co-worker that's "really into biking" knows fuck all. Stop asking for his advice. He could care less about you having the right bike. He wants to validate his bike purchase(s) through you. ABOUT YOUR KIDS: Your kids are amazing. Sure are. No one else has kids as smart, able, funny or as good looking as you. Nope. Never see THAT around here. - I have no idea how long you kid will be able to use this bike. As it seems to me, your precious is a little retarded, and can't even use the damn thing now. More likely, your budding genius is going to leave the bike in the driveway where you will Subaru the bike to death LONG before the nose picker outgrows the bike. - Stop being so jumpy. I am not a molester. You people REALLY watch too much TV. When I hold the back of the bike while your kid is on it, it's not because I get a thrill from *almost* having my hand on kid butt, it's because kids are unpredictable, and generally take off whenever possible, usually not in the direction you think they might go. This is really cool, this is a in progress bike fence in fruita, the fence goes all the way to the white house in the background, they havent made much progress in the couple times ive driven by it. There are tons of bikes here, from walmart crap to old road and kids bike.

Picking the right size bike...

Step1 Measure your inseam. This is best done barefoot. Stand against the wall and put a book between you legs so it pressed right up against your pelvic bone. Make a mark with a pencil on the wall along the top of the book. Measure the distance from the floor to the mark in centimeters.

Step2 Use your inseam measurement to get a rough idea of your road bike size. Multiply your inseam by .65. This will give you a good estimate of you road bike size for bikes measured center to center. Thus if your inseam is 86 cm, you will fit a 56cm road bike (86 x .65 = 55.9). Note that many road bikes are measured center to top. To determine how to fit these bikes, multiply your inseam by .67.

Step3 Subtract an additional 10cm and convert this measurement to inches to get your mountain bike frame size, roughly. Thus, if you fit a 56cm road bike (c-c), you will fit a 46cm - or an 18" - mountain bike.

Step4 Consider top tube length. In many ways, this is the most important aspect of sizing a bike. Two 18" mountain bikes may have different length top tubes. Or a 54cm and a 56cm road bike may have the same length top tube. Given the same top tube length, the bigger bike may be more comfortable in that it will allow you to get the bars up a bit higher.

Step5 Know that women have longer legs and shorter top tubes than men. Unfortunately, most bikes are designed for men, and women often have a hard time finding a bike that will fit them well. Luckily, some manufacturers have begun to make women-specific models.

Step6 Test ride some bikes once you have gotten a rough idea of what will fit you. This will help you determine what is most comfortable for you.

We just finished riding 24 hours of Big Bear (24 hour Mt. Bike race), Morgantown, WV.

This was one of the coolest and most difficult races for which the Sonoran Pirates have put into port. I've never been more proud of our pirates.

This trail was 14 miles long and 1630 feet of climbing. The descents were RIDICULOUS. The climbes were up to 50% grade. The rock gardens were huge, mossy, muddy, and slippery. Lots of log-overs, jumps, ledges, mud holes, and a .2 mile-600 foot descent that nearly boiled our brake fluid.

Everyone did remarkably better than their own expectations; which was phenominal. We all took something very positive away from this experience. We are all better riders for having done this race.

Big props go out to Sarah and Alexis, who, both being somewhat green to Mt. Biking, rode like warrior poets; doing so much better than anyone expected that there wasn't even someone there to meet them at the finish because no one expected them to be back that quickly.

Alexis was the youngest female across all categories. She was the second youngest rider by gender.

Craziest ride award goes to Lacey, who, after having broken her light mount, rode at least 4 miles of this ridonkulous trail holding her light her left hand, and still managing to brake and shift.

Collectively, our 7 riders rolled 140 miles, and cranked their bikes up 16,300 vertical feet between 12:00am an Saturday and 11:10am on Sunday. If you add in the pre-riding from Friday evening, we did 210 miles and climbed 24,450 feet.

Huge thanks to J&L for dragging us from our banal history oriented D.C. vacation to shred the WV back(woods) country. It turned out to be the highlight of our trip out.

About WV: Holy crap! When Josh was out riding we actually heard gunfire! The guy at the toll booth for the park didn't have most of his teeth...neither did the gigatinc lady with him who also had no shoes.

Josh, having seen a bear and her cub while pre-riding, wasn't sure if he should be more afraid of the bears, man-bear-pig, or a hick playing a banjo and looking at him with wanting eyes. I think the later warranted the most consternation. At least Man-Bear-Pig would give you a clean death. But, not to be out-done by the local, Josh actually rode his night lap with a dagger duct-taped to the frame of his bike!
